It's almost gone

Hannah's hair has, maybe, a couple days left. Yesterday, the hair she did have had matted into such a tangled mess overnight, that, cutting it was the only humane thing to do. It would have been painful to brush for someone without a sensitive head! Besides, huge handfuls have been coming out by the moment, so cutting it short seemed like a two problem solution. This is, of course, a mix of emotions for everyone. However, it is such affirmation that the chemo is really working. Time to pull out the hats! :-)

Grandma Patty took the big kids out to the bouncy place last night and Rian and I had a "date" with Hannah. She was finally feeling like eating again after battling painful mouth sores from the chemo. It was slightly surprising to hear her request Chinese food for dinner though! So, we ate take out Chinese and watched one of her favorite movies, Cowbells. I can't say I recommend it as I lost all objectivity after the 100th viewing.

  1. Carrie,

You left a comment on my blog the other day, Masala Chica, in response to a post I had written about the state of health care in this country. Your email wasn't listed - so I wanted to reach out to you.

I think you and I believe the same things intrinsically - and would do whatever needed to be done for our children. In reading about Hannah's battle - my heart goes out to you in so many ways. She is a beautiful girl who looks like she is full of spirit. I will pray as hard as I can for her speedy recovery.

This year, our close neighbors, the Carmicals (www.declansjourney.com) had their lives rearranged by the chaos of cancer. There are so many things that were brought to my attention about what families who have young children with cancer go through. Please reach out to them on your own journey if you need support.

I wish you and your family all the strength in the world.

  2. Chinese food and Cowbells? Sound like a good night! Good to hear she's feeling like eating; it'll keep that famous spirit up!

  4. awww, I'm so sorry for her! :( I can't imagine having to watch my baby go through this. I cannot get over the huge smile on her face in some of these pictures. It puts a smile on MY face, just looking at them.
I can't wait to meet her!

I told Rachel this was going to happen to Hannah's hair, because of the medicine and she said "Well, then I'll need to bring her something beautiful to wear on her pretty head! We can look beautiful even with NO hair!" :) And so she will be on the look out for a band with a flower or a nice hat ;-)

  5. OH, Stef, you are going to love this. Those aren't just "pictures". That is my offical ballot return envelope. I noticed too late. I wonder if they will except it with purple marker all over? hee hee. Btw, Rachel sounds like the sweetest girl!

Kiran, thank you for your prayers! I went to your friend's blog. Oh Girl! That was difficult. I am so sorry. My heart breaks more than I can put into words for the moms who lose their babies.

    Love you, Janea.

Mugdha and Sarah, that was a good night! She was in a great mood and I made it through another viewing of Cowbells. ;-)

  6. That grin is awesome, such a happy girl!! She's stronger than I would be going through something like that. I personally am a hat lover so I encourage her to wear all the hats she can get her hands on (though not at the same time)

  7. I have a blonde wig she can have to play dress up with. Perhaps I'll get her a pink one, and some other goofy colors. I hope she enjoys Halloween and gets a sweet tooth one of these nights.

  8. She looks so happy in those new pictures!! Glad she a great "date" night. BTW... my mom got mouth sores from her chemo... so the nurses had her suck on ice during the treatments..they said it helped with mouth sores for some reason.. and it did .. my mom never got another one after she started with the ice.. Maybe ask the nurses for Dr if it would work for Hannah as well.

  9. I don't know what's going on--I haven't been getting your posts on my Google Reader, so sorry for the delay in commenting!

My heart goes out to you as well. But Hannah's strong and lively spirit really springs forth from the screen--the page? Thank you for giving us these updates so we can dedicate our thoughts and hopes toward her and your family. What a sweet girl.
